LUCA (Latinos United for Conservative Action) celebrates our First Amendment win in forcing Fort Worth to overturn its unconstitutional ban on certain events held on city property simply because of disagreements with the event’s content.
Initially, the city’s management had implemented restrictions that blocked LUCA’s events, citing non-discrimination policies and incomplete paperwork as grounds for cancellation. However, we recognized the ban as politically motivated, appearing to target our conservative values. Refusing to back down, LUCA argued that these restrictions violated our First Amendment rights.
Through persistent efforts and public outcry, LUCA’s determination led Fort Worth to recognize that its policies were outdated and unconstitutional. The city subsequently initiated a policy review, prompted by groups like LUCA who would not “sit down and shut up” when faced with attempts to limit our ability to share our message with the community. This resulted in city leadership acknowledging that their previous approach was incorrect, leading to policy changes to allow such events to occur at city-owned facilities.
